Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) surgery: Does anyone know if in the UK there is a device that dissolves within months?

Yes, there is an absorbable device called the 'bioSTAR' which can be used to close ASDs. This is licenced for use in Canada and in Europe, but not in the USA. The 'sails' of the device are made from a purified acellular collagen matrix (a bit like a gel sheet). Over time the company report that 90 - 95% of this material is absorbed and replaced with the bodies own cells. The arms of the device are still made of metal. The bioSTAR is a relatively new device, it certainly seems to have attractive properties, but hasn't yet been proven to be any better than the devices which are more commonly used.
