Kate's Ireland Ride

Kate's Ireland Ride

In June 2016 Kate Sykes embarked on a 700 mile bike ride from the most Southerly point of Ireland, to the most Northerly to raise vital funds for The Somerville Foundation.

Kate was born with Tetralogy of Fallot. Until her operation at three years of age she struggled to play like other children. She was breathless, passed out and her skin was tinged blue. Now 37 years on, she is fit and healthy. She is a keen cyclist and has completed a number of shorter bike tours. Her heart condition does affect the level at which she can exercise, and she needs to keep her heart rate to lower levels. Kate has learnt to understand her condition and be mindful of her boundaries whilst continuing to challenge herself.

Cycling between 40 and 50 miles a day, Kate carried camping gear allowing her the freedom to stop where she wanted. This represented a luggage load in the region of 25Kg, so the pace of the ride was slow and steady. Starting at Mizen Head in the south she headed Northwards and hugging the West coast of Ireland, passing through Counties Kerry, Clare, Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Donegal before arriving at her final destination of Malin in Head in the north roughly a month later.

“I'm raising money for the Somerville Foundation because I'm keen to give something back to an organisation that has really made a difference in my life. Through the Somerville Foundation I have been able to understand my condition, how best to support myself and where to get help when needed. It has also introduced me to a community of GUCH's and this has been an incredible experience, which has felt very supportive, informative and welcoming.  The conferences have also been really useful in learning more about my condition and what's available.  I'm doing this ride to acknowledge all that the organisation has done for me and for others, and support it to continue.”
